About the Author
Patricia Wentworth (1878–1961) was one of the masters of classic English mystery writing. Born in India as Dora Amy Elles, she began writing after the death of her first husband, publishing her first novel in 1910. In the 1920s, she introduced the character who would make her famous: Miss Maud Silver, the former governess whose stout figure, fondness for Tennyson, and passion for knitting served to disguise a keen intellect. Along with Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, Miss Silver is the definitive embodiment of the English style of cozy mysteries.

Genteel Murders
By drkhimxz
It is always a pleasure to return to Miss Silver and her cool appreciation of the varieties of evil which lie beneath the surface in even the most genteel of characters. In this book we are led to the scene of the crimes in Post-World War II England by a young widow with a small child who has just accepted a job as a menial at a typical estate in the English countryside. By chance, she has just been rediscovered by a Scotland Yard detective whose heart still beats more rapidly at the sight and presence of her. Through yet another chance, arranged by the author, the Lord of the Manor has come, worried about what he believes may be a murder plot against him, to his old friend, that same detective. To round out the chance events the author has contrived, said police officer is a friend of Miss Silver, private investigator, who was a former teacher of his before embarking on her late life career. He now recommends that his old friend approach Miss Silver for advice and help with regard to his problem. So, omitting some details, we end up with Miss Silver in residence at the same country home in which the young woman is working, and, when murder takes place, who is the officer in charge of the investigation, but the Inspector, also an old pupil, who has been helped by Miss Silver in the past, and his assistant is the younger detective we have already met. Yes, put baldly like this, it does seem crudely contrived, but in the hands of a skilled, experienced writer, it comes together most naturally.
By the time she began working on this book, Ms Wentworth had already done some twenty odd other ones and was quite skilled in making the characters live and the coincidences seem most natural. She fills this typical English (Literary) Manor, with an odd assortment of people who, within the modest space of the novel, she gives individualized personalities and complex relationships.
While this is not the best of the extended series of Miss Silver mysteries, it is good reading because it is good writing. One comes to care what happens to the key people involved and to view with dismay the behavior of some of them who may, or may not, be guilty of crimes. If one is favorable impressed by the book, it is reassuring to know that there are many more available to read, and that with each one read, as with any good series author's work, as the context becomes more familiar, the reading becomes more pleasurable.
I can recommend the book to those who fancy the classic style mystery and forewarn those more attuned to overt brutality and gritty streets, that one will find none of that in Ms. Silver's domain.

Excellent as always from Patricia Wentworth
By vivienne edwards
I bought this book years ago with different title (release title varies from US to UK). I was not disappointed. This is a good story with the same attention to detail that you come to expect from this author. Good character description that brings them to life. Wonderful and accurate description of life in an English village in the 40's and 50's.
