A modern classics returns

Samson Raphael Hirsch holds a special place among Jewish Bible commentators; he is the first of the modern commentators who wrote in the vernacular, writing in German, which is no longer as accessible to Jews as it was when he wrote in the late 1800s. This is a new translation of his greatest work.
The translation is clear and easily understandable to the English-language reader and the print is pleasing to the eye. And, of course, the commentary is Hirsch at his best. He is a rationalist who is deeply religious and familiar with the classic commentaries.
My only complaint is a modern trend to transliterate the names, leaving less educated readers to wonder who "Yaakov" is, when it would be easier to render it as "Jacob". But, alas, this has become more commonplace in Orthodox Jewish circles.

Must Have, as Relevant Today as Then

Rav Hirsch insights on contemporary issues are as relevant today as they were then (the more things 'change' the more they remain the same). The Rav's perspective and commentary are a different perspective from commentaries from other illustrious authors such as Me'am Lo'ez, ArtScroll and Rashi so make a more full understanding of the weekly Parsha.
